Even browning and protective crunch
Lightly butter or oil the outside for a golden, crispy crust. Use medium-low heat to allow the interior to warm without burning the exterior. Covering the pan briefly helps melt cheese and heat fillings evenly. For even browning, press gently with a spatula or weighted pan.
Method options:
- Skillet: preheat, add buttered bread, cook low and slow until golden; flip once.
- Oven/toaster oven: 375°F for 5–8 minutes, flipping midway for even color.
- Toaster: best for single slices or simple toasted bread with spreads added after.
Tips:
- Grate a little cheese onto the outside edges before toasting for extra crispness.
- Avoid very high heat to prevent burnt exteriors with cold centers.
Perfect toasting provides contrast, structure, and flavor without compromising the interior.
